My Japanese is not good, but I think it's saying

"There are no accessories, just the box"

"Since many years have passed there is some damage and dirt"

Well, I learnt it because I was living there for a bit - my biggest problem was with the writing system; kana is pretty simple, but learning the kanji and the compounds seems to get exponentially more difficult as you go on - after about 18 months, I had only learnt about 600 kanji, and it just seemed to be getting harder and harder. The fact that at this point I was at about the level of a Japanese 3rd grader wasn't exactly great for my ego either :smile-new:

I also had a Japanese girlfriend who spoke very good English, this certainly helped with the conversational side of things, but also meant that when I ran into anything that was written and looked complex I just got her to deal with it (lazy, I know...).

We've been learning kanji for a few weeks now in my Japanese class. I didn't like it before and I still don't like it.

I need an expert English translation for the following:

This is the story for SD Gundam Dimension War for the Virtual Boy, which appears in the original Japanese instruction booklet.

Please know that if I receive an expert translation for this, I plan to use the translation in the English instruction booklet that will be included with the game cart containing the English-patched version of the game, which is going to be released as a complete-in-box set by a team at Planet Virtual Boy in the near future. It is important to note that this project is simply a fun thing for Virtual Boy collectors, and I myself won't be getting a single cent for the whole thing, even though I will have made the entire instruction booklet file - less, perhaps, the translated story - that will be printed off and distributed for a price to cover the expenses of the individuals who are acquiring all the materials and making the items for this limited production run of the game, neither will my name appear in the instruction booklet anywhere. Thus, I can credit whoever gives me the expert translation at Planet Virtual Boy, but your name most likely will not appear in the instruction booklet itself, just as my name won't appear there, plus there won't be any proceeds for me to share with you, since I myself will be getting none. I hope the person who chooses to help me with this will understand all this.

Here is a link to my preliminary English translation of the story at Planet Virtual Boy, which I made a while ago, and to a high resolution scan of the original page of the Japanese instruction booklet. I plan to revise my preliminary translation for this limited production run to the best of my ability, if nobody desires to help me out a lot by giving me an expert translation:

I originally posted this over at ROMHacking.net, but the thread got hijacked by an unrelated discussion about video codecs.

Over at the 3DO boards, poster and native speaker FUJISAN was kind enough to agree to transcribe the dialogue from some of the FMVs in the Japanese-exclusive 3DO game Wacky Races 2: In Space (aka Chiki-Chiki Machine Mou Race 2: In Space, or チキチキマシン猛レース 2 イン スペース).

Here's his first contribution, a transcription of villain Dick Dastardly's opening speech:

I've made the following very rough attempt at translation, with my very poor Japanese-language skills, some help from FUJISAN, and good ol' Google Translate:

However, I'm quite sure this isn't 100% accurate, especially the middle part. Suggestions for improvement?

Would these mean something like "1st annual", "2nd annual"; or more like "1st division", "2nd division"?

I sent a tweet to Arino from GameCenterCX, can someone cast their human eyeballs over this and see what he said in response?

Google translate brings back something along the lines of "Good morning from Japan! I think I want to cuddle a koala more than once!" but the translation is kind of mangled. Any takers?

    Hi RetroSwim,

    Here's what he said:

    ----------------------
Good morning from Japan! I've never once thought I'd like to cuddle a koala...
    ----------------------

    Cheers!

    Hi Zoinkity

Generally speaking, they mean the following:

    ----------------------
だい1かい -> 第1回 = First 〜 (as in "the first time sth happens")
    だい2かい
-> 第2回 = Second 〜 (as in "the second time sth happens")
    ----------------------

The Kanji for the "かい" part might clarify the context a bit better. Do you happen to know what it is?

    Cheers!

    Hi goldenband,

I've gone over the translation, and honestly speaking, I'd say it's spot on!

If I were nitpicking though, I'd recommend substituting "jerk" for something a little more creative. After all, the Japanese, "骨骨野郎" is really begging to be localised into something a little more boney!

    Cheers!

    Hi BenjaminStevens,

As you can see, I'm backtracking through the many posts I've not had time to address recently, and have just reached yours!

Anyway, not being very familiar with Gundam "lore", you might find a few clunky phases, but otherwise I think the following should fit your needs:

    ----------------------
    Story

How much time has passed since mankind set
its sights on expansion into the cosmos...

Now, as the embers of a multitude of battles begin
to dim, a familiar sadness takes hold and the tears
of the many begin to flow…

Even now, as the fighting persists and the situation
becomes grim, new-type mobile suits being developed
at numerous sites are being recalled and mobilised
    on the front lines.

G Force, a battle-hardened unit of seasoned Gundam
still revered today, have been assigned to this project.

Tasked with retrieving the mobile suits and obliterating
the enemy forces, G Force entered into the fray.

During their many skirmishes, G Force intercepted
intel on the existence of new enemies and new-type
mobile suits. Their mission status then hanged.

    "Engage the new-type mobile suits!"

Together with the new-type mobile suits already
recovered, G Force heads to a new battlefield to
    confront their enemy…

    ----------------------

    Cheers!
