if you do not want to mod the cartridge and the console in any way to get expansion sound, your only option is to buy a famicom.
The US Front Loading model can have expansion sound by soldering a single resistor between two expansion port pins. This is pretty easy to do, anyone that has ever soldered electronics before can do it. If you haven't you'd probably want to find someone that has soldering experience with electronics. While you might be able to do it, the investment in tools and materials to solder one resistor is too much.
I'd mug an old lady for that thing. I wish I wasn't so broke at the moment, I just moved to redneck centeral, and there is mostly farms around, and not many places to find a job :/
Download the PowerPAK mappers files. http://www.retrousb.com/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=34 It's in the zip and called audio_mod. It's a picture that shows where you put the resistor.
I used I think 47k ohms. But later I think some people suggested 100k ohms is probably more accurate. The difference mainly would be that 47k ohms would be somewhat louder than 100k ohms. It sounds ok on my system as I recall.
Thanks, maybe ill try something in between, 75K maybe Stock Status changed to 'In Stock' now at Retrogate, hopefully mine will be shipped soon
Get a variable resistor that goes to 100k or even 1 mega, hook it up with center and one side like a normal resistor. Then adjust until you find the best spot. Remove the variable resistor without turning the shaft and measure the resistance. Then look up the nearest standard value. Combine 2 or 3 in series to get closer to optimal value. For example, you find a perfect spot at about 52k, you could get a 47k + 4.7K in series to get close to 52k.
Damn, status now at 'Back ordered' again , guess i didnt get one from the first batch. Thought i ordered it promptly when it went up on the site. Has anyone ordered one and got a confirmation of shipping email?
The NES N8 is not really backordered. He says he just needs time to make them. He is making them in the order the orders were received.
Not to be critical, but how is it "much better"? I'm really curious what you could specifically mean.
Everything seems to load faster and so far it has played everything I have thrown at it. The price is great , but Bunnyboy is supposed to release a Powerpak 2 soon so we shall see really.
So in other words nothing other than maybe it loads faster. The PP doesn't take long to load things either. Do you own a PowerPAK? It's a good product too. It also "plays everything I throw at it". Last I checked, both products are very comparable. PP doesn't come in a Famicom version though. But the point is I don't think people should be saying "it's much better" and then fail to have any substantial reasons behind that.
I also don't like CF cards very much but hey that's just me. I sold my PP and kept my N8 , to each his own really. I should have said what I said a bit differently being *I like the N8 much better*.
