Has anyone tried doing the above? I have a debug unit on the way and wanted to attempt it before putting new stuff on the drive

Make a full clone image of the hard drive before doing anything with it.

Oh for sure. Any particular program you recommend? I read here: https://www.s-config.com/original-xbox-debug-console/ that debug consoles don't have locked drives but others have said that some do?

I'm pretty sure that they are unlocked.

There's plenty of programs to make an image of a hard drive, I don't have anything off-hand to recommend. I'm sure someone else will chime in with something.

That's not what i've heard, they might be locked and be unlockable with the proper passoword or the supposed password-fits-all XBOXSCENE or TEAMXBOX.

Mine is locked and couldn't unlock it yet, can't even go to the DOS enviroment as it will shutdown the keyboard with the HDD plugged in.

They are not talking some modded retail, Dev/Debug units can run unlocked HDDs.
That said iirc some are locked.

OP a tool specifically for recovering deleted data from XBox and 360 kits has been made and its creator aerosoul wants to talk with you on the Alpha Archive discord, I'll send details in a PM.

Here is the project for anyone reading

Is this tool better than Photorec? It has an option for Xbox drives specifically.
