No new progress in this video but there are more details on the repair attempt at the 20m38s mark. The drive was replaced with a new old stock drive but that drive was also faulty, so he replaced the laser diode on that and got some static to play.

I agree.... dunno... it reads the TOC, ... maybe someone can write some code to see what kind of tracks it can read. (dac might be bust, but do we need it for homebrew?) homebrew might be burned badly or need to be pressed? they(nintendo/sony) dint add any copy protection right?

I was at the Sacramento Game Expo today and had the opportunity to both see and play this piece of gaming history and just wanted to thank the guys for bringing it out and letting us all experience it. Also, for being real nice and chatting with me about it for awhile. Thanks again!

Also, could it be that it actually works now, just that you need the bios cart to make the cd game to work?

If it can correctly read the ToC from the disc, then the pickup, decoders and servos are all working correctly. About the only hardware failure I can think of that would allow you to recover the ToC but corrupt the audio would be some internal failure on the CD DSP or - more likely - the buffer RAM that's attached to it.

Hope not, I'd much rather one of the more knowledgable MAME devs take this over, as at least they'll know what they are doing.

Ben has Felix to help him, not sure on his gaming hardware knowledge but Felix seems like the guy that can solve any electronics problem.

You'd be surprised how many MAME devs know hardware very well. MAME emulates hardware, if you hadn't forgotten, so to write code to emulate it you need a pretty good understanding about how it works in the first place.

AFAICS, Ben Heck has very limited hardware experience from the SNES Playstation era. Whilst it's good that he's getting involved and bringing attention to it, someone else should be 'in charge' of getting the thing working again.

    Yeah, he fixed it.
The "issue" now is how to program for it.

I can imagine the think-tanks of various homebrew game programmers going into overdrive to write games for a possible SFX-100 emulator...
