New commercial game for the Sega Genesis?

Discussion in 'Unreleased Games Discussion' started by TheWaterIsWet, Apr 26, 2006.

  1. My first post here after being a many month lurker, but rest assured, I have nothing to do with these guys. Found it off the Sega Genesis wiki one day after seeing a Sega modem on ebay. Apparently they're releasing the 1st commercial Sega Genesis game after many years.

Could be as simple as an English translation of The Prince and the Pauper, but quite ambitious.

Commercial if you mean that they will sell it yeah. But it will not be licensed by SEGA alas not an official game.

And yeah, it's basically just a fantranslation that they are putting inside carts and selling if I've understood correctly.

    ...

The game is an English translation and heavy bugfix of an RPG originally created in Taiwan, with the blessing of the creating company. AFAIK, Sega does not grant licenses for Genesis games anymore so this is as close to official as we are going to get.

    More info here -

No RPG on the Megadrive made by any company ever used VWF, not even Phantasy Star IV.

Beggar Prince is 10+ years old, being that it was released for the Megadrive in 1996

so it is not the newest game for Sega's 16-bit console. only the latest to be released in the U.S. for Genesis. other MD-Gen games were made after Beggar Prince.

the game in its original form is was known as:
'Qi Gai Wang Zi' aka 'Myth On Light' aka 'New Beggar Prince'

I doubt the game will come out. Last I heard the people working on it hadn't been payed in some time and were pissed.

For those interested, there's a preview of the coverart here.

It's not exactly the best.... ok, it's a bit crap. But hey, it's only the cover. Still waiting for my game.

I have. Looking forward to my copy too!

And imo £29 ALL IN isn't that much really. Cheaper than games were back in the day (and cheaper than many new games these days). Each to their own of course and I am MD biased and will spend whatever it takes for md stuff.

Best of luck with it Brandon...and make sure my copy gets out sharpish hehe!

I appreciate the amount of work that must have gone into this project, but other people are providing translations for free. It seems a bit odd to flip from that to £29, is it the manufacturing costs that make it so expensive?

Sure thing. I don't think its just been translating though. Bug fixing too as well as the manufacturing costs that you mention. Perhaps licensing costs too?

Also with other translations don't you just get a patch to stick on a rom? I'm not sure I admit so please tell me if I'm barking up the wrong tree, but I thought generally for translation projects you wouldn't get physical media, or if you did not as comprehensive as this seems to be (ie an attempt to replicate the authentic md gaming experience..case, insert, instructions and cart).
