    Well i must disagree ;) Your problem might not be the gears but the bowl in the joystick which is torn down.
    With epoxy and a metal ball you can fill up the bowl again to repair that part.
    Also you didn't use and lubricant/grease to allow more smooth operating.
    One op de reason the joystick do grind down is that the lubricant is gone by dust or dried out.

    My experience with filling the bowl with epoxy is that it is very hard to get a perfectly round surface, that sticks out just as far the bowl originally did. When I tried the epoxy way, I would feel different amounts of resistance from the stick, depending on where I moved it. I think fixing it with epoxy is good enough if you play casually, but if you speedrun/play competitively it just is not good enough.

    Perhaps your method with the metal ball makes it better, but I am still not entirely sure if I can get it good enough to my tastes..
