as the title states, the owner of the recently surfaced GD-R of Half-Life needs help quickly on ripping to an SD card via dreamshell

AFAIK, his brother owns the disc and is only visiting, so time is of the essence

in the past, when i've attempted to rip to SD card via DS, it crashed, and it looks like he is having the same problem but did get the IP.BIN which is:

    EGA SEGAKATANA SEGA ENTERPRISES9F22 GD-ROM1/1 U A799811 T11001N V0.80020010418 0WINCEOS.BIN SEGA LC-T-110 HALF-LIFE

so this looks to be very legit. it even has the "Powered by Windows CE" MR logo after boot, pointing to the original developer IP.BIN from the WCE SDK. here is the link to his post, i told him i'd be making this thread
    https://www.facebook.com/groups/thedreamcastjunkyard/permalink/1852517524817075

time is of the essence, we must retrieve this rip

Dcsdrip or httpack would be the preferred ripping methods.

dcsdrip? link? is there a premade CDI for it?

he doesn't have a BBA, or even a keyboard to get the build # and build date

edit: i found the site, we just need to translate the instructions to non-broken google english http://eternalsetuna.blogspot.com/2015/03/dreamcast-02.html

edit2: @-=FamilyGuy=- can you make a working CDI right now for this? it is kind of important and i have no CD-Rs otherwise i'd be on it already

He can just execute it from dreamshell, put it on the sdcard. Extract the lzh archive with WinRAR or 7zip to get the executable.

    there's two binaries, 1ST_READ.BIN and dcsdrip.bin??

edit: they both have the same inflated size so they might be the same(?)

One's scrambled, one is not. One of them at least will work.

ty. i'm hoping we can begin digging deep into this rip within 48 hours. i'll be making a whole new thread dedicated to the forensics since i pretty much learned every nook and cranny of the other build. but it won't be as massive and self-derailed like my first one, as i'm a lot better at hldc specifically now

try to keep an eye on the thread throughout the night in case any problems arise

at the very least, we can FINALLY have a TRUE GDI of half life with the original non-downsampled audio

There's a pinned thread about ripping GDR's. Maybe there's more helpful information in that thread as well?

    Yeah damn I totally forgot that it's a GD-R.

You'd need a swap trick I developed, or a sd2 to rip it with a retail dreamcast.

The guide for the swap trick, which requires two CD-R at least, is in that stickied thread.

The guy has sent me this message:

"Luiz Nai dscdrip11 didn't work on the HL disc. It did work on commercially released games. I'm thinking that dscdrip11 only works on commercially released games"

The guide is written for a DC coder's cable BBA, but it should be easy to adapt to dcsdrip. The latter just didn't exist back when @Dot50Cal and I wrote that guide, eleven years ago. (I'm now officially old)
Fun fact: That guide/technique is my first ever contribution to AG, I made an account just for that.

There are no known technique that would allow to dump a GD-R with a retail Dreamcast without resorting to either a swap trick or the SD2 — or a yet-to-be-discovered technique that would probably require a @jhl level of reverse engineering on the GD-Rom board.

THAT SAID: In the video posted earlier this week, we see someone booting the GD-R with a SystemDisc2 (SD2). If they still have the latter, what they would need to do is simply to:
    1. Boot into DCSDRIP using your preferred method.
    2. Insert the SD2 as if you were going to rip it and ensure that the Dreamcast recognises it (spins it up and you can see the tracks); don't rip it.
    3. Open the GD-Rom tray normally — so the DC is aware of it, no swap trick here — and replace the SD2 by the GD-R.
    4. Ensure that you can see its tracks properly and rip it.
    5. SUCCESS!
All of the magic of the SD2 is in its special ring, so you don't actually need to boot it to allow the GD-Rom drive to boot GD-Rs, only to authenticate it.

    I hope that helps!

Pleaseeee help us: "It looks like that method requires a BBA which I don't have. At this point I'm planning on returning the disc to my brother, who will decide what he wants to do with it. It may be a while per his other comments. I'm open to doing one last video if there's interest."

The method is the same with the SD cable, it just didn't exist 11 years ago. Making the trap disc, loading it and swapping will be the same regardless of the ripping method.

If they have a SD2 at hand, it should be really easy to do.

Sorry just saw this, but I believe everything you need is covered.

Dcsdrip 1.1 by jj1odm and then a minimum 2gb SD card.

Need a retail disc to pass auth then switch for gd-r should dump well.

They need a sd2 or my trap disc technique if there are audio tracks, Sonic Adventure or an other 3tracks GD-Rom would work — swapping so the DC isn't aware of the disc change — if there are none.

Oops sorry. Didn't mean to spread wrong info.

I just thought it had to keep the drive active and then half life should likely be 3 track so I figured it would work with it.

if you have HDD mod, then use GD Ripper. It's very fast

Their only issue really is that it's a GD-R. But they seem to have a SD2 at hand, so it's almost trivial to dump once you know that once it's authenticated (not necessarily booted), the SD2 will allow to read GD-Rs until a reboot.
