Back in the mid-1990s, I was friends with the chaps at DMA Design (all the people I know who worked there have since left).

After several visits to their offices in Scotland, one member of the DMA team gave me a debug disc of the original PlayStation version of Grand Theft Auto.

He told me that, in the version he gave me, the game world was presented in bright, garish colours. However, before publication of the game, they were advised to tone down the colours and make the game feel more 'gritty'.

I dug out the disc, and took some photos from my TV screen. Obviously this isn't the best way to take screen shots or judge colours – but does this look any different to you? The game feels finished – but as I never played the original Grand Theft Auto, I don't know if the colours used here are any different to the game that was released to retail.

Does this look any different to you? If the colour palate is different, this will become the gem of my games collection! (I can post more pics if necessary...)

Wow, it looks like the colours in my version are completely different - what a find! I thought I'd lost the disc, but I'm glad I found it...

Wow, lovely piece! Thanks for sharing. People have been curious about GTA betas for a while now, nice to see something actually exists. From what I can tell GTA's release date was 28/04/1998 where are your disc is labeled 12/01/1998, so you've got a good three months worth of development for potential differences.

Nice find! I'm always interested in seeing GTA betas; since Rockstar release very few demos for even just the media to play. I'm still looking forward to the day when a GTA III beta surfaces.

Here are a few more shots I took as part of my original batch - they're from the first few minutes of the game, and the pictures aren't great as they're taken from a TV screen, but they should sate your appetite until I can take some better pics.

Does anyone have good advice on how I can take pics that will represent the colours properly? And is there a particular part in the early parts of the game that I should try and capture? Let em know, and I'll do my best.

Load it up in an emulator if you don't have a good capturing setup.

I'd like to see more of this one. I have fond memories of the original GTA... I honestly can't remember the different colour palette or not though? Would be cool to see if there are any other differences as well.

wow cool to see a real beta disc of this :) i have had this exact version since about 1999. its one of those pressed bootleg versions. i never realised it was a beta
i can provide pictures for proof if need be. would be so much cooler to have coopers version though

EDIT: also wanted to add a few text differences in some of the missions. and the loading screen used a slightly different font. if anyone is interested id be happy to make a video
of the game running and also willing to dump an iso an put it online so everyone can have a look around and see any differences.
