i dont remember FF7 getting a PC release untill the steam port, was this only just a demo to show off graphics cards and not meant for actual release?
It was released back when windows 95 was a thing. The steam release isn't the same as the original pc release.
Which version of the PC FF7 demo is this? Is this the one where you play through Mt. Corel or the one where you fight in the Battle Square?
The Steam release is not much more than the Win 95 version!
If you have a good setup (Voodoo and Midi) it still looks and sounds awesome today.
Try the "Ultimate Edition" @ isozone its patched up for modern systems.
Alright, so Final Fantasy VII had a release for Windows 98 and was ported by Eidos. This port was really just thrown together in a few weeks, and had some major issues, such as low-resolution cutscenes and backgrounds, since Square had gotten rid of the original files, so they couldn't re-render anything. The music was much the same, and as a result, some absolutely atrocious MIDIs were substituted. On top of that, the port suffered from a number of bugs. Two of the most common ones are minigames playing too fast, and a crash at the Chocobo Races on Disc 1 if you're using Windows XP and up. Also while not specifically a bug, the default control scheme used the number pad; making it nigh-impossible to use on a laptop without finding a pre-edited ff7input.cfg
Now, this is where things start to get interesting. Around this horribly battered and broken port sprung a small modding community at qhimm.com. Some people, such as Qhimm, Ficedula, and The_Saint dug into the game and fixed the issues where they could, patching both the minigame issue and the XP crash; and released tools to pack/unpack the game's archives, and modify that data. The game maintained a small mod community for some time, replacing models and generally just giving the game QoL updates. From these mods came pre-modded copies often called the "Ultima Edition" or "Ultimate Edition" or something, often sold on eBay or distributed on filesharing sites. These copies are often modded without care and are subject to the original bugs and then some.
Move ahead a few years, and along comes a modder named Aali. Aali noticed that the game is actually capable of loading an alternative graphics driver; so he takes it upon himself to write one. Over the course of a few months to a year, Aali successfully builds an OpenGL driver for the game. This driver completely changed the status of the PC port. Thanks to the numerous features that extend beyond being just a mere graphics driver, his mod instantly turns the PC port into the best version. Not only are all those old bugs fixed, the game is no longer restricted to a maximum of 800x600; modded files can simply be loaded from a mod directory, no longer must you re-pack the game's archives for every small change; music can be loaded from directories, in any format given you have a decoding .dll for it, thereby fixing the utterly shit MIDI; and many more small quality of life updates. This mod actually serves as the basis for the current Steam port, the Android port, the iOS port, and the PS4 port. If you look at the install directories for each of these, you will find at least one unmodified .exe of the 1.02 release of Final Fantasy VII for Windows 98. Usually these are accompanied by some other exes not from the 1998 release, due to how the official build is put together (DirectX instead of OpenGL, no .cfg file, etc.).
All this makes that demo very -VERY- interesting to me, seeing as how the final was put together in a short amount of time. Makes me wonder what sort of unused content there would even be if anything. Probably just some debug symbols and the like. Any chance you'd be willing to dump that disc and send it over?
