With the IDE mod, it's possible to connect a DVD Drive IDE on the Dreamcast.

So, my question is, if someone write an application for DreamShell would it be possible to get a DVD working on the Dreamcast?

For what? Playing Dvd movies? Or backups and or roms? I guess anything is possible but I find it very unlikely.

Yes, this is possible. I even believe that somebody messed around with the idea of it before. Can't remember where I saw it but it was done at least once that I know of if I recall correctly. Is it really worth it though? I would say not with all the effort involved. Maybe for the cool factor, but why bother when you can use the same mod to connect an IDE to SATA HDD adapter?

Just a curiosity if this is possible or not!

    For both functions!

If Sega ever contemplated putting a DVD drive, then I guess software decoding of MPEG2 wouldn't be a problem, if someone manages to create that, it would be first tested on reading DVD isos from a Harddrive, and maybe later reading from actual DVD drives. Now that I think of it, even if it were to work on Dreamshell as a storage device like the HDD it could still load games faster than gdroms. I'm starting to believe it's easier to find and cheaper to get dvd drives than working IDE drive.

I'd say it would be possible. If the support for the DVD/CD file system access was written into Dreamshell. But how many games would you fin on a DVD compared to a HDD?
As for DVD movie support, that MAY work too, but a player would have to be written that makes full use of the CPU and GPU to decode and playback smoothly. Quite a task for a skilled programmer.

You'd have to load it from the DreamShell menu just like when you load a game off of a hard drive.

    Interesting stuff.
I'm very interested in Dreamshell right now. Still hoping for a fix for getting the game "presets" working on IDE drives.

I've tested and Shenmue is working great from the serial port!!!!!

So about the DVD thing, how will it work? Are we going to put the isos/gdi inside the dvd an choose like in the HDD or are we going to burn a game per DVD?

How about movies? Does the DC has enough power to run videos?
