So car, the earliest PSX version I've been able to find is the SCPH-1002, would this be a good one? Also, aside from the early consoles that have the RCA jacks in the back, are the shells of the PSX all the same? i.e could I put the guts of one PSX into another, or is it like the PS2 where nearly every revision of the hardware also changes the construction of the shell?

Being in Australia, the earliest would be the SCPH-1002 since SCPH-100x (last number is country code) is the first revision.

And from my very fuzzy memory, I think the internals of the cases (posts and the like) are different as the board gradually shrunk with each revison.

The drive is positioned differently on some models. I only know the two models I have, a 1004 and a later revision, and they don't mix and match. Perhaps there are others that do?

I heard that the newer psx consoles have a slightly better graphic chip.

The very early ones certainly have a worse one - there is some code in later versions of the run-time library that specifically checks for the revision of the GPU that's installed and runs different code if it detects that it's running on a PU-7 or early PU-8 and implements some workarounds if that's the case - these appear to be related to texturing - if you patch out the check and use an old machine (or a blue debug, which has the old GPU) then some games display fine and others have messed up textures.

Thinking about this people (mostly) say the first revision is the best to get.

Do you think in 10-15 yrs time people will be bashing down the door to get the original xbox360?

Lol i was indeed being sarcastic. Think on it this way, the original megadrive/genesis, sms, atari 2600, playstation 1 people prefer the earliest possible revision, but not the 360....

Consoles used to start with more features and then get removed over time. Or over engineered (or using the best parts) and then cost cutting later.

360 was quite the opposite, which is the only one I can think of.... even the original PS3 had more hardware/features than later models.

Are there different versions of the PSOne? I only have one of those for testing...was wondering if I should get another.

Yes, but unlike the original PSX they didn't change the board number - they are all PM-41s. All that changes is the dash number on the board.

-11 was the original release and the latest I've seen was -71. As far as I can tell, the video and audio output circuits have not changed, although there were a series of alterations to the power supply circuits.

-61 replaced the GPU with a new one that had built in video RAM. I suspect it was a die shrink, too, since it went from a 3.3V part to a 2.5V one.
-71 has the new CPU and a new CD controller that has everything integrated including the work RAM - this is still a 3.3V part.

When you guys say "use PSONE lens" you mean install a lens designed for use in the PSONE right? It seems like the replacements that are on eBay are for use with both models, how do I know which is a PSONE laser? The color of the plastic? Or the model number (KSM-440BAM)? Because I've seen this model in both black and gray, so I'm not sure. Or were they smart enough to manufacture a replacement laser assembly that has the improved mechanism of the PSONE?

440BAM is the PSone laser unit.

Id suggest not buying a chinese one off ebay, they are reproductions/clones.

Yeah, but that's because you can't get the genuine Sony ones anymore right?
