60.34GB free? Is that HDD compatible with the retail unit? It sure dwarfs my 14GB of user space on my 360.

No. Debug hard drives are not compatible with retail units.

Nice to know, but could you give me some technical information on why that is?

Is it because debug hdd use unsigned hard drives and retail hdd use signed hard drives.

retail HDDs have a blob with a.) the microsoft logo, b.) a copy of the drive's INQUIRY / IDENTIFY response, c.) a signature over b

the devkit seem to ignore this. they don't have this blob at all.

Out of curiosity, how hard is it to obtain the software portion of the devkit (compiler/tools/whatnot)? Harder than getting the xdk hardware?

Yes obtaining the software portion(360 sdk,360 recovery disc) is pretty much very hard to find.It would be easier to find a 360 xdk then to find the software side.

Are you sure? I have the two (XDK Recovery and XDK setup) on a DVD. I ain't installed them but when reading the eula on both there is no reference to this.

    I could be wrong.

You most likely have the recovery disc and the SDK for xbox 1.And if you do have it for the 360 than congrats on a rare find.
