This may help someone in the future, I'd assume it would work if the server was Nt351, Nt4, 2000 or 2003 and or the client was Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or Windows 10. My scenario consisted of W10 and Nt4 Server.

    On the Windows 10 PC
    RightClick Start> Run > secpol.msc
Local Policies > Security Options > Network Security LAN Manager authenticatioin level
Select Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated

You can now \\computername and successfully logon to access file shares.

Yeah, I had to do this for Windows PE (version based on Win7). However, I had to apply the change in the registry (no group policy on winpe). We were connecting to a 2003 share at the time.
