I think nintendo uses a DVD and SD card pair to test the equipment and see what is broken.

    Yes, they use it everyday.
They have one who can detect unauthorized modification :)

To the kiosk units? Is this done remotely or does a rep go to the store to do it?

It seems you know quite a bit about this process. Why don't you tell us everything you know in one post? That would be very helpful! :)

If the special SD Card is available to you, could it possibly work with a retail unit?

Nice! I was hoping to do all of that myself, but I didn't have the time and couldn't be bothered honestly :D I'm glad I sold it to you!

Hmm, I still can't get my kiosk unit into that settings mode. How did you get yours into that mode, code1038? I might be doing something wrong.

I recently obtained a December 2014 CAT-I update disc, on CAT-R media. It spins up, but the console doesn't do anything with it, unfortunately. Spying on the disc with a hex editor shows some interesting bits. Apparently it contains a NUS update. It has some interesting clear text strings like "devmenu" and "ndebug".

I might need to get into that special menu to get it installed.

Ah, awesome, thank you. Inserting an empty SD card and powering it on booted to the settings menu. I was able to first pair a wired (dev) Wii controller, then use it to navigate the settings screen to pair the wired kiosk gamepad.

I had the wired wii dev controller hanging around. Not sure if I have a retail wii controller. :)

I think the wireless daughterboard is the same one used in retail consoles, but the wires are just redirected to the connector on the back rather than the front.

Just to verify myself, the one with optical disc drive allows to play retail game discs, right (since it's said it has a retail disc drive)? And does it have a webbrowser?
This system would be interesting to make play imported games and make cheat codes for them

I got a wii u kiosk from Eb games Ontario, It worked fine until I unhooked the back and fiddled with it. The game pad became disconnected.
It would turn on, run the demo and say "game pad disconnected" in red on the bottom of the screen. It sat in the corner of my boyfriends living room for a couple weeks before finally getting the urge to read online about it AGAIN!
Upon finding this thread. And you guys talking about a "magic SD card" I just put in a random SD card that I know is full of pictures and music into the wii u kiosk console. It started up with a black screen then straight to demos the first time. Then when I restarted it it went to wii u kiosk settings! Luckily the wii u registered the old wii controller and I could use that as the arrows and select buttons so I could pair the game pad. But, it worked. Just throw in a random SD card.
