I just finished up Final Fantasy VII, which I loved. Great experience. I've now completed VI through X, but I'd like to start another RPG. I have a few options. I'm leaning toward starting V, which I've only ever played for a half hour at most. I do own XII and XIII, so those are always options. I also have Tactics, which I've been leaning towards. Then there are others like Xenogears and Chrono Trigger that lie outside of the FF realm. Anybody play some of these and have an opinion? I'm obviously open to suggestions.

Xenogears is life changing. I keep meaning to pop it in my PS3 and give it a good playthrough.

I'm sitting on Both Bloodborne and the Nathan Drake Collection right now and I don't know what to play through first. Bloodborne scares me. As in, I KNOW the game is going to bend me over and make me it's bitch.

    So one for Xenogears...

Do I need to play Final Fantasy Adventure beforehand?

Can't speak for Xenogears, but Chrono Trigger is definitely worth playing through

Anybody have any experience with the Lunar games? Lunar: Eternal Blue is looking like it would be right up my alley.

If you want to stick with the FF universe V is pretty fun, I dunno, it's more quirky than VI and later. If not, I think you mentioned somewhere you haven't played Earthbound yet. That game is highly recommended.

Did you mean mystic quest? Yes, will be incredibly garbage by comparison.

FFA is going to be so odd to compare, the graphics and music aren't even comparable. Anything Gb will seem lesser than SNES. I don't think it would matter story wise either unless you're some purist about lore.

I'm not. I just wasn't sure if I would be missing a lot. SoM definitely looked solid, though. There are a few SNES RPGs that I need to give a go.

Do you need to play Chrono Trigger in order to play Chrono Cross? After VII, I'm not sure why but I kinda want some 3D. I guess Parasite Eve wouldn't be too much of a stretch either. Also has anybody played XII?

Xenogear is a beast of a game.

FFIV + After Years if you enjoy it. I think it's better than VI, mainly due to the more distinct characters traits and a less contrived story.

Xenogears definitely is a beast of a game, but worthwhile if you can get into it (some are put off by the combat and story). The added bonus is that you can then move on to Xenosaga, which has some similarities in play style.

Parasite Eve is great, but very different from typical RPG's. 2, not so much.

Chrono Trigger is excellent and while it's not necessary to play before Chrono Cross (I really didn't realize it had much influence on the story when I played it), it is so much better.

Lunar was really fun and the cut scenes were well done.

Also consider the original Phantasy Star games (especially 3 & 4).

FF12 & 13: DO NOT PLAY. Consider using the FF13 disk for target practice or for testing steel wool. Do not directly look at the reflection of yourself on the opposite side as it may cause loss of sanity.

I like romances in my RPGs, that's why I'm leaning towards Lunar: Eternal Blue. I'm having a really hard time here. I'm about to just go with FFV because at least I can utilize fast forward to move through some grinding more quickly. Does Lunar 2 require grinding?

From your list, Tactics. I think that's the one on the PSP. Only PSP game I have played. But it's different than regular RPG. Reminded me of Jagged Alliance 2 on the PC.

I never liked RPGs until Secret of Mana. It was a gateway game for me. After that game, I was willing to give RPGs a go. All the SoM sequels, sadly, were failures. Steer clear of those.

Vagrant Story also was excellent. My personal favorite of the PSX RPGs.

Despite playing a bit of FFV, I decided on Lunar: Eternal Blue. I'm liking it so far. It took me a little bit to adjust, but it's very enjoyable. The music is great and I've attached myself to the quirky characters. I don't think I've missed too much from not playing the first one.

Lunar: Eternal Blue for the PlayStation. Fun little game. It has me pulled in.

EDIT: I guess it is the "Complete" edition. While I won't go into all that's changed, from what I'm reading this is the superior version.
