Hey, guys. I wanted to make a topic regarding this "remake" I've been working on for the past 2 months now. It's a long story... Back in 2011, I was looking for no-coding-required 3D game making engines, and I found 3D Rad. I then proceeded to get Sketchup and the official 3D Rad exporter for it, and I made a small little game where you drive around a green terrain (one of the default ones they give you) in Homer's family sedan, and you can drive around and look at various Simpsons locations. It was awful, to say the least, but it started my interest in game development. Thankfully I have a CD I burnt with a compiled copy of the game, so I can always re-visit it Speed up to this year (2016 at the time of this topic creation): I had the idea to resurrect this project, but make it with all the original resources that the original game used. I started on May third, and the first roadblock came: The level model that the game uses is very high in detail, and the engine can barely handle it. The level model, when converted to the DirectX .x format is 52 MB in size! I had decimated the model so it has less detail, but this screwed the model UV coordinates up royally. The houses were weird looking, and it just looked terrible overall. So, as I was implementing new features and adding characters to the level, I decided to scrap the old model and replace it with a non-decimated model. The biggest pain was I had to re-position everything on the level terrain, as the scaling was different. Anyways, I later on replaced the old Homer model I used (it was a very bad looking dark pink sedan with Homer in it with a new, but still bad, pink shape that looks just like the family sedan seen in the game and Homer inside of it. The next roadblock is I wanted to make it possible to pick up passengers and drop them off. I had a basic mechanism working where you could pick them up by driving near them and pressing "C", but the flaws were outweighing the good parts, since every time the dialog conversation finishes playing, you can press "C" again and the dialog will play again. I wound up fixing it after much thinking, but still. I then had implemented the nuclear bus, but the bus didn't work right, where he wouldn't do anything but crash into houses and get stuck completely. He's removed for now, until I can find a way to make him drive around the level by himself without screwing up. Speed up to now: I now replaced the car model for the third time, with a slightly better one that has textures and looks identical to the original, albeit the lighting on it is weird. Here's a video of the game in action (a demo is in the description, for those who want to play with it. Don't expect much, as it's very buggy, and you'll need a good PC to run this) EDIT (5/30/2016 at 3:41 AM) I made a bit of an update, along with an updated demo .I am aware that Bart is broken at this time, though that will change (hopefully) soon. EDIT: (7/2/2016 at 12:17 PM) I have canceled this project. However, if you want to see how I was able to make the game in the first place, I have released the source files to the game (a clean installation of 3D Rad, with the project file and the assets needed to get it working) Direct download: www.dropbox.com/s/3b232rbb28vprl8/The%20Simpsons%20Road%20Rage%20-%203D%20Rad%20installation.7z?dl=1
Even though it wasn't the highest quality game, I still liked Road Rage. If you have the time to spare, there's no reason to stop now. You'll definitely gain experience and knowledge through your efforts.
Wanted to give an update.. I've lost interest in working on this any longer. I have released the entire project file and the assets online for those who want to tinker with it. Go ahead. www.dropbox.com/s/3b232rbb28vprl8/The%20Simpsons%20Road%20Rage%20-%203D%20Rad%20installation.7z?dl=1
