Yeah, I just got an SSD for my computer and it makes loading programs so much faster. Photoshop loads in about 2 seconds. Chrome loads in less than a second. I have a 240GB SanDisk model; I have the OS and programs on the SSD and all my documents and other data on a 1TB HDD. The SSD really makes a huge difference.

Installing Sandboxie so you can flush out all the crap that gets onto your computer is a good idea.

Used to do reinstalls of 95/98 every few months, XP every 6-12 months. It would just accumulate so much crap and slow down.
Last time I installed Win7 was about a year ago when I got a new SSD. Old SSD died so I couldn't clone. I'm not noticing any performance slowdown or issues but all of my drive space is almost gone. It just eats it.

Linux used to be crummy on some hardware, but these days they support most major manufactures out of box. My Linux systems (At various version levels from bleeding edge to LTS) all have crazy good uptimes. I would bet Mac probably could do the job just as well, if only you didn't have to pay for every little upgrade that gets released.

Linux Mint, Ubuntu, or any DEB based distro would work great. Between Dos Box, Emulators, Virtual Machines, or Wine, I can run pretty much anything I need.
