So my friend gave me some video tapes and said he had no idea what was on them. But I'm currently ripping them and the first one says on the front of the video: "Sega Katana Demo TRT: 3:25 4/24/98". Enjoy!

Nice video. For a second I thought it was going to be my long lost Sega Saturn demo tape that shows the very early Panzer Dragoon and Daytona Hornet in high resolution driving around a flat floor. Then I realized it was for Dreamcast :p Still cool though.

That's fantastic! Thanks for the share.

The very first demo seemed very close to SCUD Race, the tunnel sections looked familiar.

    fantastic tech demo.
I think the scud race is contained in official devkit source sample.

I can see how "Fishman" could've become Seaman :p I wonder if some employee saw this video and was like "I'm gonna make a game out of THAT" :D

    Nice find!

I love to see how these early demos underestimate the real power of the system, and then the process along the years slowly starts to push the hardware to its limit.

It's not that they underestimated it, it's that there wasn't anything else to demonstrate by that point in time. That was incredible as it was back then.
And I don't think the limit was ever reached, or that anything released was pushing it, with the Dreamcast. It died way before that could happen.

Me too. It always takes a while for devs to get their head around the system and I'm not sure we ever saw exactly what the DC could do as it died so early.

Case in point the Saturn! It took a while to get to grips with that, remember "it can't do transparency" Ha!!!

Sega seemed very kean to show off the light sourcing potential in the video.

Could well be they took some inspiration from that!

Tenjin also looks like Virtual On . Hmmmm I wonder...

Really cool, could this be something to show to third party developers?

Here's another, it's an internal marketing video with commercials/clips from news, etc.

These videos are awesome. Only 5 minutes into the second one and man Sega used to be so weird and creepy I love it.

    Where did "that" Sega go!!!

The first few minutes show how cutting edge, risky and daring they really were, I suppose that's what ultimately caused the challenges they had and lead to the safe/boring company they are now. The risks they took always made them exciting and stick out from the competition and is one of the reasons I always loved them so much.

Could you imagine them back in the console market now, who knows what they would be up to?

I've seen that Katana Demo vid a while back.
I actually believed i had seen just about every video made concerning promotion and marketing for system during its time. But i've never seen that Particular 35min long marketing video before (Mind you, i've seen most of the TV News segments, E3 videos showcasing the SEGA floor and interviews with SEGA US staff at the expo that makes up the early portion of this video). Nevertheless, I'm impressed.
But holy shit did SEGA (or whomever they put in charge of this video) fuck up the showcase segment for Street Fighter Alpha 3. The whole footage used was entirely composed of Street Fighter Alpha 1.

The early demos were run on Katana Set 2.1 development hardware. This came in the form of the NEC ARC1A PowerVR prototype card in late 1997 for devs to use in Pentium II PCs. The Scud Race demo (April 1998) did not underestimate the power of Dreamcast, because Set 2 kit only had a fraction the final Dreamcast hardware performance to begin with.

Katana Set 4 kit still had only 40% the performance of Dreamcast.
