So I been having an issue with my Sega CD Model 2. The laser seems to get stuck at the bottom and I tried to figure out what was going on. I made a video that goes a bit in-depth in the problem since some people on other forums didn't understood my problem. Anything helps, thanks. :)

The laser sled limit switch is showing continuity? Doesn't look like it from the video here.

Like I said in the video I tested the switch with the multi-meter and it showed continuity.

Push the sled as far away from the spindle as you can, short (and hold) the limit switch and power the unit.

Does the laser stay in position?

Take the laser assembly out and investigate the limit switch traces and solder joints. It sounds like the controller reads the limit switch as open. So if the contacts are shorting, make sure that's reflected in the circuit that it's closing.

I took a look at the board and I found two places where the limit switch sends a signal to, the SONY CXA1372AQ at Pin 44, and the BA6298FP Chip at Pin 23. Both of these pins show a continuity when the switch is closed. I was trying to see if the service manual can tell me anything about these chips, but I couldn't find anything. Another thing I noticed was that some of the pins of these chip and some parts of the board had a sticky substance. I think that this is from the capacitors leaking since I seen I have seen the same thing while I was working with some Game Gears. The drive itself has 6 capacitors, but none of them seem to have leaked since the top part of the board is clean.

The sticky substance you describe could be electrolytic fluid. Or more probable, it's unspent flux on the board. The BA chip is the lens controller.

Any of those caps domed or ill-shaped?

No all the capacitors seem to look fine.

Check the voltage supply on that BA chip. Is it getting 5V? Also put your finger on it. Is it getting warm or scalding hot to the touch?

I left it on for about an hour and the BA chip got really hot. I'm not sure if that's normal.

I just found a brand new replacement drive on ebay. I just ordered one. I'll update when I comes.
In case anyone wants to find what parts the Sega CD uses I found a wiki page on it.

Here is the ebay page I got the drive from:

OK my new drive came in today and it solved the problem, but it seems like the laser doesn't work. It can't read any audio discs or burned discs, so I might buy a Sega CD game for it to test it. If I put in a blank disc it begins to spin, other disc do not.

Did you remove the ESD solder blob from the unit?

As for your laser not reading cd-r or music discs try a orginal audio cd you probby can get one for cheap just to test.
