The actor George Kennedy has died aged 91, of natural causes.

After injury caused him to retire prematurely from the army, he became technical military advisor on The Phil Silvers Show. Silvers encouraged his acting, which led to a long career with parts in over 200 productions. After numerous television appearances and parts in films such as Spartacus, Charade and The Dirty Dozen, he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in Cool Hand Luke. He was then well-known for two film franchises - Airport as Joe Patroni and Naked Gun as Drebin's boss, Ed Hocken.
