The comedian, writer and actress Caroline Aherne has died aged 52, after losing her battle with cancer.

Caroline and her brother were born with cancer in the eye, leaving her partially sighted in one. She worked the Manchester comedy circuit, trialling one of her most popular characters, Mrs. Merton, on Piccadilly Radio, where she was a receptionist. Mrs. Merton was then featured on Granada TV before earning her own BBC series, The Mrs. Merton Show. Whilst this brought her into the spotlight, she had already started working on The Fast Show. This was then followed by perhaps her best-known series, The Royle Family, which she co-wrote.

After the break-up of her marriage, Aherne suffered from bladder cancer, depression and attempted suicide. She moved to Australia for several years. After withdrawing from the public eye, she returned to writing sitcoms and narrated Gogglebox and Pound Shop Wars. She won 4 BAFTAs for The Mrs. Merton Show and The Royle Family.

Two years ago, she was diagnosed with lung cancer. However, her long battle with cancer was actually ended by throat cancer.

RIP Caroline - a brilliant writer who, whilst she may not have got the full recognition she deserved, didn't want it. Another great gone too soon.

I really liked Caroline Aherne. Everything she was in had quality about it and her writing for the Royle Family was excelent. I'm from the north myself so I could easily relate to the characters.

But what a life, cancer all the way :(
