I've recently bought N64 replacement joysticks so I bought they cheapest on Fleabay, because me being Dutch and all. So when they arrived and I popped open one of my worst case N64 controllers I found out the cheap 4 wire replacements I've bought aren't as easily compatible with the ribbon cable they normally have. So my question: Can I still use these, the 4 wire replacements, to replace the joysticks? (Because as far as I see google doesn't seem to be on speaking terms regarding this subject.)
Pictures of the original and the cheap replacement are needed to give us an idea if they can be swapped or other ideas, no pictures leaves us guessing instead of being certain.
The 4 wire ones use plain old pots. I don't think they are compatible out of the box.. a lot of the aftermarket n64 controllers use them.
Shebus, years ago you struggled to get joy/thumbsticks, then it was the gamecube style only as new (felt good but not accurate), then copies of the original style came out and what, now they replace non-fitting ones? Lol, how back to front.
You need some kind of PIC which converts the signals into something the N64 controller will recognize. I've seen mods that convert Gamecube and PS1 analog signals to work with the N64; maybe there's something similar for the replacement ones.
The cheapest way would be buying a $0.50 Attiny13 for each stick and flash it with the hex file optained from here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ga8rLSz64XQ
^ Seems pretty cool. I may have to try that out someday when/if I replace mine (which probably should be changed). I already got an AVR programmer. I wonder if it works as perfectly as the N64 one?
