Replacement AC adaptor for a PAL SNES?

Hi guys! Does anyone know what the specs are for a replacement AC adaptor for a PAL Super Nintendo? I know it needs 9V input, but the official adaptor doesn't say if this is AC or DC! Nearly all 9v AC adaptors I've found have been DC output. Apparently it's OK to use either according to Google, is this correct? With regards to amps, the official adaptor says 1.3a, but I assume that anything between that and 1.5a (the limit of the SNES' fuse) would be OK? What about the plug size? Apparently it's:
Outer Diameter 5.5mm, Inner Diameter 2.5mm, Barrel Length 9.5mm

Many of the AC adaptors I've seen only give one size (i.e 3.5mm), would this measurement be ID or OD?

 

It's perfectly safe to use DC power supplies with the PAL SNES so long as they meet the voltage and amperage requirements, polarity doesn't matter for AC. You can also use an NES power supply if you like.

 

SNES takes DC current. So a wart rated at 1.5 amp will work. If it is more than 1.5 amp, no worries. The SNES will only draw the current it needs. You could have a 100 amp adapter and it would work because the SNES will only draw what it needs. The fuse is to protect it if something happens to make it draw more than 1.5 amps.

Most barrel plug measurements are the OD of the barrel and OD of pin inside or just the barrel if it has a hole and no pin.

 

Yeah. Just DO NOT use Nintendo's own PAL SNES adapter with anything you aren't certain of, ever. It outputs AC!!

US, Brazil, Japan, and Korea SNES, are all DC adapters as usual.

I've found a 9v AC adaptor that has a plug size of 5.5mm x 2.1mm which sounds like it might fit (ID is a little smaller). Sadly, it's only 1A, which is much less than what the SNES requires isn't it? I've found another AC adaptor that's 9V with 1.5A, but it's plug size is 3.5mm. I'm gonna need some sort of adaptor to convert it to the correct size aren't I? I also found another AC adaptor that's rated at 1000mA, I'm no electrician, but isn't that just 1A?

*EDIT* found another AC adaptor, this one is 1500mA (i.e 1.5 amps I'm guessing) and it's plug size says "5.5mm x 2.0mm-2.5mm". Sounds like this one would fit and it's got enough amps too! Would this one be just what the doctor ordered?

 

The NTSC SNES adapter is only 850ma. I don't know why PAL SNES adapters are 1.3A

 

The PAL SNES would have the same amp requirements wouldn't it? Wonder if it's anything to do with with the NTSC SNES requiring DC?

Either way, what do you guys think about the 1500mA 9V DC adaptor with the 5.5mm x 2.0mm-2.5mm plug size? To my untrained eye, it looks perfect, since it's the correct voltage, amps are high enough and the plug will fit.

 

I use a dc power supply with a rating of 9vdc 1.3amp with no issues. I did a current test on one years ago and it was under 1amp draw. The ones I use are a quality one with no interference issues, be careful as some cheaper supplies will introduce horizontal lines on the screen. The plug tip size is 5.5 x 2.5, which you can fit yourself. The standard snes ac adaptor is 1.3amps due to being an ac adaptor not dc.

 

How do you know if a power supply will have the horizontal lines issue? The one I'm looking at has various protection features (i.e overload, short-circuit and over temperature) so I would hope it would be good quality.

 

You won't know until you try, I bought a few of different sellers off ebay. Out of 4 sellers only 1 was any good (it also included the black insulators on the AC pins to pass Australian Standards AS/NZS3112:2004). The others I binned or marked as not good for consoles. I ended up going back to getting them from Soanarplus, who is one of Jaycar's suppliers.

 

Do you have a link to the AC adaptors that you use?

 

More amps are fine as the voltage reg will just use whats needed so i used some 50p adaptors and just fitted 2.5mm dc plug.
If you do that make sure about the + and - part.

There you go. Be aware though they don't look like the picture, heck they may have even been changed! I have seen that as well and that is how I got stung with previous power supplies from ebay sellers. I bought some older ones and for the price they were very nice, (again black insulators on the input pins and a power led in the power supply itself) bought more from the same seller 6 months later and they were absolutely crap!

Also further to my testing I tested them on an AV modifed Atari 2600, I may be wrong but I swear these seem more susceptible to the intereference....

 

Why not just use a PAL megadrive power supply?

Also snes has centre pin of 2.5mm whereas sega (md, sms type) has 2.1mm. Be a tight fit, if you could get it on.

You're thinking Super Famicom. Not PAL SNES.

 

A Mega Drive PSU would work as well...
