Removing scratches from CRT tube

I wish! Constantly learning new stuff and can't ever see me being nearly as good as many other members. Just wished they'd impart their knowledge in guides ;-)

My buddy did this a while ago to his new astro city screen. Looks great...but honestly the scratches didn't bother me enough to really care.

 

It depends on what type of scratches. The tiny surface ones in the anti-glare surface can get streaky and deflect the image underneath so it looks like water on the monitor. They really were tiny, but made a big difference.

 

Are you restoring that jalopy? (Said in an affectionate and respectful manner).

That is some project!

 

I know from bitter experience that sometimes a project needs to be nipped in the bud, even if it means making a loss rather than it becoming a money pit!

I wish you woulda taken a couple pictures of that game with the scratches then a picture after had fixed the scratches.

 

Nice one parris, got a few scratches on my CRT tv but never thought about how to get rid of them so this might come in handy at some point.

Yeah, sorry about that. I thought the before & after with the screen off showed the light scratches really well, however it might have been more interesting to have seen the streaks on the screen that I mentioned.

 

Yup! A fair bit of effort, but a good result. I did kind of lose track of time, sense of feeling in my arms, plus it was so cold in the snowbound UK that I may have actually frozen solid throughout the entire thing! There was snow being blown under the garage door and my fan heater really made no difference.

I did time myself. It did take a whole 2 hours to get it absolutely perfect. Any less than that and I'd not have been satisfied with the result. I kept checking the screen. From a pile of tiny little scratches (I'll admit, I doubt anyone else would have really been bothered), I now have 2 left.

 

now that you've "fixed" the screen you need to preserve it I guess. Should you be covering it perhaps with a cloth until it's time to play the machine?

 

I am looking to see whether there is any kind of spray protector that could be applied, but most other people who have polished their Naomi screens report that the only disadvantage they have had was that the screen (devoid of anti-static coating) attracts a bit more dust and therefore needs cleaned more frequently, but needs no other special care.

A lot of older CRT screens never even had that coating applied, so once cleaned and polished they should be as good as new.

 

Could do, but thought I would try and find something that would be a once only application to refurbish the screen completely.

Never heard of anything, but surely there must be an anti-static spray?
