[Q] Has someone ever silenced the Dreamcast's GD-ROM?

Like the topic says, has anyone done it?
Without replacing it with gd-emu, sd-adapter or a hardrive.
Has anyone effectively silenced those infamous noises?

Yeah, lol, that wasn't the answer I was looking for..
I've never understood why it makes those sounds in the first place.. it sounds like it needs to be greased, badly. Or maybe if the lid and casing was soundproofed somehow.

 

i silenced mine by replacing it with a GDEMU.

I dont think there is much you can do the original drive to make it quieter.

In all seriousness, there has to be some way. Now, if soundproofing it would mess up the airflow - you could probably tweak the drive itself.
Maybe even replace it with some other drive, like a hacked/tweaked pc dvd drive or something..
I have a feeling that someone probably has done something by now..

 

It sounds like the sled motor is making that noise. Try hooking it up to a AA battery or something and see if it makes a loud noise. If so, change out the motor with one thats quieter.

 

If it's very noisy, try looking at the pinion on the sled motor - I have seen quite a few DCs with cracked pinions. which results in one pair of teeth having a larger pitch than the others.

Good idea! I won't be doing this the first thing I do though as I'm basically hoping someone will share their expereince.

I don't think it's noisier than other Dreamcasts, it just baffles me that Sega would release a console with this issue in to the wild..

Yeah, surprising how noisy the Dreamcast is with its whirring, beeping, etc.

 

It was an extremely inefficient design and I always found them noisy even when running consumer GD-ROMs. My first DC was a Japanese import model with the modem replaced by a transformer pack (I forget the model number but this was back in early 1999) and some of the crunching noises that it made when running Sonic Adventure got old very quickly.
