I tried to do the password reset and it is giving me a message that passwd is
    blocked by another process.

The TOC of the drive lists a directory passwd.lock

    Any way around this?

Requires input of the original password, which I don't have

cd to /etc and delete passwd.lock

    Works just fine now.

Ya, it was probably just a stale lock state. I see it all the time under Linux.

Can I ask how you get in there if you don't have to password to login?? Do you hook the hard drive up to another system and get in that way?? Or can you get in on the same system??

Lilo "Tool single" boot for some reason bypasses the security in the normal boot.

Someone needs to sell me a PS2 Tool again so I can join in! 2nd year at University, course going really well, but no arcade gaming and no time for even a shot of a console for months at a time! Sigh! Glad to see you got your pswd issue resolved Assembler ;)
