Hacking and trying to Jailbreak the PS4 / XBox One is allowed to be discussed here. Piracy is not allowed.

The laws of your country will affect what is legal and what is illegal.

Why are we allowing ps4 / Xbox one hacking discussion?

    • Self repair of machines, like replacing optical drives.
    • Re-purposing machines for other things, like units with broken optical drives.
    • Preservation of data of historical importance.
    • Reduction of waste (keeping machines out of the landfill)
    • Foster innovation and learning
    What is not allowed:

Hacks or mods that exist solely for piracy.

Makes perfect sense, and shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who has been around here for any period of time.

Does this new policy have any bearing on the sale of either of the development versions of these consoles respectively? Currently the site has these banned from sale.

    Thanks for this thread.
As for an example of "what to do" or "what not to do" Let's look at PT and what happened recently. (Spoilered due to high word content)

PT as you know is a Demo game on the PS4 that was removed essentially everywhere.
Since then we have saved the installable pkg file for US and EU (missing JP if it was there). Those with testkits/devkits can install it, but they cannot play it as it still locks them out without a corresponding rif file, which then prevents decrypting the pkg file that's installed.
Because of this, it remained unplayable to anyone even if they installed it. Well recently it managed to be decrypted (which required PT installed, and playable, and FW 1.76) and as a result finally freed it and now it is around in a manner that can be used on Testkits/Devkits (and when the time comes I presume Retail systems as well), but now we have the issue of trophies not working (not that PT had any but still) due to how you have to get it working.

In this case we have both files needed to be preserved (the pkg and json - json less required but still). But from there you cannot do anything as you'd still need to be able to mess with rif files, which is not possible at this time. Had messing with rifs been possible it would be a done deal, preserved and ready, but it had to go further.

This is an example of how grey the line is for preserving a PS4 game.
Just having the installable file means nothing. Having a disc imaged in full (including license data) that can be burned is not entirely enough either as you'd have to burn the image to a BD to have it be usable (even on a testkit/devkit to my knowlegde as it will think it's a PSN game instead).

Instead, you have to go even further, down to using exploits to mod the systems and data to decrypt the data itself, which only (at the moment) works for data requiring firmware 1.76 or less. Anything higher does NOT work, so you have another issue. And even then, where should the line be drawn? At the decrypted data? That's the hardest point to get to to get the data in it's most raw form. At the installable package? Thats the poitn where you have everything ready EXCEPT a way to decrypt it.

The PS4 preservation is already working to a degree, but I cannot say the Xbox One side has much progress, but it's probably going to be more of a headache. Right now the line between preservation and piracy are crossing in multiple places on PS4 and it needs time before it can be clearly separated.

That's because I've been asked (directly) to not allow it.

Can you shove money into someone's hands and buy the game? No? Then it's preservation.

Very agreeable rules, nothing to get fuzzy about.
