Well it came off a 10th anniversary japanese savedata disc. What I did was convert it to ESR, burn it, load it up on my PS2, go through each of the saves and save them to memory cards, (Thank god for 64mb ps2 cards) then transfer them to usb via a ps2 homebrew file manager, transfer them to PC, RAR them, then upload them here. It's a pretty simple process, just took an evening.

What possible benefit could there be to archiving old savegames?

 

I can say from my position. Why i'm interested with Japanese half-passed saved games files? There is some reasons:
- almost nothing was uploaded for some ps2 Japanese titles before (this is better, than nothing)
- in most games you need to watch long intro, then you will be forced to pass thru long tutorial event. And finally you will get half of game possibilities, more will be unlocked only after half game completion.
- i can't understand Japanese language, but i want to taste gameplay of these games without intro and tutorial stuff, you know

It would pretty cool to back up some old saves from my ps1 memory cards like this, how would one go about doing this?

 

I would love to make a tutorial for you, but I don't have time for now. So, I'll summarize: You will need a PS2, a software called Unofficial LaunchElf, a pendrive, and some save converter programs. You will need to boot the Unofficial LaunchElf in your PS2 (a modded PS2, or using Free McBoot, etc), access the PS1 memory card using this software, and copy your save files to your pendrive. After doing this, you need to convert the files you copied to your pendrive using proper softwares. With this, you can use your saves in emulators. For a more detailed explanation, you can find some nice tutorials if you search (Google is your friend).

Another way is using a PS3 Memory Card adapter in a PC and using proper drivers and programs. Sadly, only PS1 memory cards can be accessed in this way.

The saves there are mixed, some come from NTSC games some from PAL. Some of them are intercompatible, some are not. Game Guru save collections usually have 2-10 saves for each game with saves for several regions where available/needed. Saves for 20%, 50% 100% progress, ultra saves with everything unlocked and finnished, normal saves, saves where you start out the game with all items etc etc. A basic must have for any self respecting psx gamer

 

I know about this. I was using this before, but i was talking about PlayStation 2 NTSC-J save files, not about PS1 (except Mizzurna Falls and others PlayStation Japanese exclusives).

Do you really do this by hand? Or is it automated?


What about sorting through the "best" saves? Or at least documenting the progress?

What about sorting duplicates?

 

Total commander + Notepad ++ and sonyindex.com and gamefaqs.com. Duplicates was overwritten/skipped. Archive may contains ~5-7 clones of GTA SA and other games for example. I'm pretty lazy to document all the clones. I mean most important is Sony ID with info and stuff. So if you see your Sony ID, just use windows 7 search tool to find all the clones.

I have a request. I need something, that can convert .max files from gamefaqs.com into the .sps and .xps in batch mode.

 

Sorting dupes is difficult because you don't know the content of each save. I don't fire up every save prior to archiving it.

 

It certainly is. It would take someone to go through EACH save of every game and document it.

It would be easier if there was a file to game name mapping.
