I have a question for any PC Engine owners/fans on the board; if I were to get one PC Engine system, which type should it be? On the one hand I like the DUO because it has all the features (except SuperGrafx) in one system and looks pretty good. On the other hand I might prefer the Core Grafx / CD-ROM2 attachment because, although it is not all in one piece that way, there is a lot more stuff to look at on it (particularly the pause/play, eject, and all that crap on the CD-ROM2) and plus it has that cool cover thing that goes over it all. Getting the SuperGrafx is pretty much out of the question for me since it's really expensive and has very few games out on it, unless there is some really good reason for getting it that I've missed. What do you guys think?
Personally I'd get a Duo because it is all in one, very neat and organized looking. Also then you don't have to first find a working CD unit, but also System Cards to go with. I actually think you may end up spending more going for the core grafx and cdrom than you would a Duo. I considered getting a Duo but it costs a bit much for what little I'd actually get for it game wise.
get PC Engine Duo-R/RX unless you are game with fixing the audio issue on Duo units Duo units are well known for the audio issue though not all Duo suffer from it
My husband bought me a Duo-R and Arcade Card for Duo for Christmas, and this is all you really need to play everything (single player at least; you'll need to get a multitap to at least play 2 player games).
I personally like the look of a suitcase PC Engine or Core Grafx and CD Drive...but I'd recommend against it unless you can get them both together. I've found it impossible to get a Super CDROM2 or CDROM unit sans PC Engine. Oh...and the difference between the Duo Models are that the later ones (Duo-R and RX) don't have CD Audio issues. Yes. Duo-R and Duo-RX go for a bit more, with the RX going for even more if it comes with the original 6-button pad.
I want a CD-ROM2 briefcase setup, but only because it looks cool and i already have an arcade card pro. Honestly though, You can get away with just a core grafx for the most part, as the number of good games on the hu I feel is greater than those on CD, and the very best games on Cd are often pretty pricey. If you are buying for price get the Duo-R if you are certain you want a Cd system, else just get a core grafx.
uhg, your not serious are you? I have every rom to every console (just in case) and alll the mame roms,(working on a cabinet) While i will play the mame stuff, loading up a console rom seems really shady and just takes aways so much from the game and cheapens it to nothing more than a 2sec download.
If you're just going to pirate by downloading ROMS, why bother collecting anything? Besides, if you do care about the games, the original hardware is the way to go. While xport does an admirable job, it cannot properly run CD based games 100%. If you've played the original the differences can be both notable and grating. As for the Duo question, go for it. It's a spiff little system. Though do make sure you pick up a System Card 2.0 somewhere. You'll want it for a few gems, like the Dracula-X mini-game. -hl718
I never said anything about pirating games , I just think it is nice to have all the old schools in one neat package . I was just trying to help , If he really just wants to play some old games and catch up on them then i would reccomend just getting a modded box . If he wants it to add to his collection then by all means go ahead and buy one .
Well, I don't just want it for the games, actually; I think the hardware is interesting and cool in itself. The games are a bonus, since I could play them for free already if I wanted to. Besides, playing a game on its original system is probably closer to what its creator intended. I'm not belittling emulation, it's just that I've been down that road and I'm bored of it now.
umm.. if you are going to get duo/duo-R/duo-RX why do you need system card 2.0? Maybe you meant to say arcade card Duo? duo has the system card 3.0 built-in negating the need for the system hucard. I used to have the suitcase setup but after get my supergrafx mod'd sold it for a nice profit considering it did cost me nothing - was freebie of supergrafx I bought.
No, I specifically meant the System Card 2.0. As for why, well the reason that I stated. A few Super CD Rom^2 games have nifty easter eggs that are only accessible with a SC 2.0. The Super System Card and the Arcade Card Duo/Pro will not allow the goodies to boot. There is also the rare exception that requires System Card 1.0 to even run properly (I want to say Altered Beast is one of them), but those are a mere handful that the average collector is probably never going to run into. -hl718
Nail, hit, head. PCE has imho the nicest range of hardware and accessories for any console ever made! Original White pce - simply the sexiest initial hardware there is. Briefcase set - a treat for the eyes. Rom Rom Amp - nothign special to look at, nothing special to use. But when you put your briefcase set up on top it just looks that little bit more space age cool. LT - the screen is simply fantastic, truly special. Better than the duo monitor or navi saturn in terms of resloution and overall picture quality! Hell better than all but the most recent handheld screens. Duo Monitor - neat idea, beautifully executed design. Compact and solid. Tv function too. Virtual Cushion - its a bass speaker in a big cushion. Nuff said. Printer set up - not so much of a looker but a cool accessory to have. Sure there's other worthy items too but the above are my favourites for sure:love:
