Hello, I recently acquired an original Xbox from a friend and have been collecting games. The console is soft modded but all the game's I own are legit discs that I'm playing directly from the disc drive. Every game I've bought so far has worked fine until Crazy Taxi 3. For some reason when I put Crazy Taxi 3 into the Xbox it boots into the Dashboard and a message pops up telling me "You need to connect the DVD Playback Kit receiver to a controller port to watch movies. Remove the disc to continue."

The disc although pretty scratch free has stange discoloration/clouding on parts of the underside, here's an image that shows some of that clouding:

So, is there anything I can try to fix this, or is this a problem with the game disc? Seems pretty weird that the disc would be recognized as a dvd/movie instead of a game.

Maybe the disc was cleaned improperly by the original owner? Do you have a disc resurfacing machine or any other disc cleaning machines?

Unfortunately I do not have any sort of disc resurfacing. Is it normal that the Xbox would think a dirty disc is a dvd movie?

So let me get this straight: you're wanting to play retail games on a softmodded xbox? Just download it dude.

Your DVD-ROM Drive laser is on it's way out. Depending if some games are CD, DVD or DVD-DL there will be different behaviour from the drive. For example a CD based game might load and play fine compared to a DVD-DL game. You can tell a CD type game by a gold colouring on the disc surface.

Try cleaning it with a microfiber rag and stove cleaner. My local game store (if you can really call it that) uses stove cleaner with a CD cleaner. Worth a try.

I've got other gold bottomed discs that work fine, and I've had 0 trouble reading the 16 other games I've played so I'm skeptical that it would be the laser going out. Is there a list online or a way to tell what type of disc a game is so I could rule that out?

Ok so after a bit of testing:
I have Rallisport Challenge 2 which is DVD-DL, and works fine.
    Music CDs works fine.
Other Gold Colored Games work fine.
According to research Crazy Taxi 3 Xbox seems to be a regular DVD like most games, but does not work.
DVD movies do NOT work on my Xbox, It does not have the plugin/remote addon, but the softmod should allow that to be circumvented, however...

When i look in the mod menu's Autolaunch settings the DVD player is listed as e:\Apps\DVDX2\default.xbe
E:\Apps exists, but the directory is empty, which explains why DVD movies don't work. It still does not explain however why the Xbox misreads Craxy Taxi 3 as a DVD movie.

I believe your laser in your dvd drive is also dead. I have had that happen to me when lasers are about to die. I knew it wasn't the game cause I tried the game in a known working dvd drive and it worked perfect....replace that laser and you should be good to go... you can still buy the lasers new from china.

That's the error I got when my DVD drive started to go out as well. But looking at the disk discoloration, it might be the disk that's the problem.

Can your PC at least read the video-DVD part of the disc (short clip saying "this is an xbox game, play it in an xbox, stupid!", iirc), or does the disc have problems there, too?
