well you could test it with your pal games easily. does it have 2 sets of switches or just one?

If its a frequency switch, you should see your monitor report back 50 or 60hz. if you switch it after booting a PAL disc.
If you switch region and freq to anything other than US region 50hz, it will make a PAL disc not boot. 50hz and US region=PAL 50hz and JP region= Asian PAL which is not really a standard. 60hz + JP =JP mode, 60hz + US=US mode

ok, then switch the others before powering on and booting the game. In game they won't change anything.

You could also take a quick peek inside, see where the switches are connected. This shows how a region mod is done.

Change one of the switches while the machine is off, then hold L or R while booting. The text in the bottom right corner says the region, it should change if you boot up under each region (changing it on the fly will not make a difference!).
    from memory:
    - PAL-C-v1.01a is the normal pal unit (regioncode C, as in hex for 12).
    - PAL-4-v1.01a is a PAL unit set to USA region (regioncode 4).
    - PAL-1-v1.01a is a PAL unit set to Japan region (regioncode 1).
    - NTSC-1-v1.01a is a PAL unit set to Japan region and 60hz output.

    USA models use v1.00a instead.

But, Japanese units won't display that region there - this only works on PAL and USA machines.
