Let it be put on public record, that I'm 100% okay with a word filter if it converts foul words to equivalent Judge Dredd slang.

 

It IS an expression that got its roots in homophobia; but the vast majority of people using it nowadays probably don't even think about homosexuality when they say it.

I'm not saying it's a correct expression that people should use, just that when a 10 yo kid says his Christmas gifts were "gay" you can't automatically call it homophobic, or heterosexist as we should more accurately say. Though associating "negativity" with the same word as a sexual orientation is insidiously perpetrating the idea that it's a "bad" one. Hence why this expression should disappear from common language.

 

When defending against the usage of certain words in certain context be mindful that there are many who don't consider those expressions harsh, and you are essentially playing Social Justice Warrior. Making a big deal out of how YOU think those words are perceived, and the targets of your defence may be more insulted by your arguments than the expression in question.

I vote for 'smurf'. You wouldn't even need a list of bad words (which gets old really fast) - just take a whitelist and replace everything else.

 

I know this is a bit off-topic, but off-topic discussions that goes into something debate oriented is part of the reason why I love this forum, lol. You guys make me giggle at times..

Anyways, I for one am against anything "homophobic" and against filtering of content just because a few kids may decide to pop onto a forum with a dominant "mature" userbase.

 

I used to be on a forum where all the words in the filter (well the common ones) were changed to other similar words. For example, many people were told to go "hug" themselves.

 

Couldn't we just ban the children on here? All they seem to offer is a lot of grief because they can't get stuff and drive away people who are interested in just knowing about the things that exist.

 

You guys could do like the Something Awful forums: have a filter on only for unregistered users, when the user logs in the filter is deactivated.

 

Or is there not another option where we can just choose to have a filter in our account preferences? Have it enabled by default.
