About 3 weeks after Star Wars Episode 7 came out Kyoto leaked a major spoiler in the shoutbox. I hadn't planned on seeing it in theatres, but seeing it on pay per view I was avoiding star wars threads and message boards until then but this showed I had no choice but to watch it now cause it could be spoilered in the non-removable shoutbox. I finally found the ignore option and it works in irc. Can't there be some rule about spoiling Star Wars tho? It's a major event and 3 weeks don't seem like adaquate time to give people before leaking major spoilers.
> How to deal with movie spoilers in the chatbox? Don't read the chatbox then. Please don't try to censor other people because you don't want to hear certain things. I wanted to avoid spoilers too, so I installed a browser plugin ("Force Block") that blocked pages containing certain keywords. Worked nicely for me, and would've helped you too.
3 weeks seems plenty to me. But yes, its your issue not wanting to read something - not others for talking about something.
That's like saying something and then saying don't listen to what I just said. It don't do me any good to not read the shoutbox now.
If there is something I don't want to read spoilers for, I keep away from sites with chat or Facebook etc. You are not forced to goto any site that has text on it. Imposing rules to stop this sounds like a very bad idea. If you were so excited tor star wars, I'd imagine you would have seen it within 3 weeks. By 3 weeks time I had heard plot points on the TV and radio, would you complain to them and make them enforce a time rule??
So that's ~0.0992 mph to get there within 3 weeks. Seems very doable, even on foot. The cinema I watched TFA in was ~240 miles from where I live. Went to the very last showing (of the undubbed version, at least), too. Did not run into any spoliers beforehand.
I'd say maybe put a reasonable time-frame on it. No spoilers within a week to a week and a half of the release of something? Or maybe as a courtesy put spoilers in a certain format?
It sucks that the nearest theater is not close to you but you cant expect the shoutbox to be censored like that. When Star Wars came out I just didn't go on facebook or reddit for a bit and I also didn't read the shoutbox on Assembler because I figured someone here would spoil it. Just try and stay away from certain parts of the internet if you think you may accidentally read spoilers.
My town only has a "traditional" cinema - in fact, it has since the Eighties. Well, not only that, but the previous cinema... and the other 6 or so that have come and gone since the dawn of film. Up until the release of The Phantom Menace, this meant that for the real big screen / super sound experience, you had to go to London. London is further than 50 miles away. So... if my friends and I really wanted to see a big blockbuster, we'd make a day of it. Nowadays, there's a multiplex 15 miles away... so again, I go with friends. That's the answer - get together with friends and go to the cinema. One of you must drive. For me, it costs about £5 in petrol - split that 4 or 5 ways and it's nothing (or rotate popcorn buying). And in America, petrol is much cheaper. As for chat, it is a case of you can't really censor what people say just because you might mention a film, television programme, sports game or other event that someone hasn't got around to watching just yet. That said, people are usually quite thoughtful around the time. Likewise, any requests for no spoilers would have to apply to absolutely anything, just in case. Not just Star Wars. UK members would have to keep quiet about Doctor Who, Sherlock, Top Gear... and US members would have to keep quiet about a ton of programmes. Not to mention you get films before us - Star Wars is an exception, but you could mention a film a month after it's release and spoil it for UK members. You can scroll down easily enough without looking at the shoutbox. If it really bothers you that it isn't removable, just ask a moderator to ban you from chat and it'll disappear - they won't be able to unban you, though!
That's too bad cause I could have asked to be banned after the release of each Star Wars film until the blu-ray release. I don't know that I'd miss the chat that much in that amount of time.
Spoilers have never bothered me honestly. Like Bad said ignoring the time frame bit, don't go online where discussions happen. Limiting what others can talk about for a couple of special snowflakes seems quite selfish to me. Use your brain and steer clear from sites so you don't spoil it yourself. Setting some rules regarding this sounds like putting a naughty corner for people who say "fuck".
Now I feel a bit bad. I'm the one who recommended @Moo make this thread after he spoke about it on the shoutbox. Can't say I didn't try haha.
I believe I saw this on Facebook the other day. That poor dog. I know I would crush all of those cupcakes. I LOVE cupcakes.
