I suspect that most people would take "private" at it's most basic meaning.

If you really want to ensure that your trading / personal discussions are kept private then I suspect from now on another means of messaging will be utilised by anyone wishing to keep things exactly that.

For the most part however I simply cannot see what interest the mundane mumblings and background mutters that I have been chatting about via PM would have to anyone else. It must make for boring reading! :banghead:

We traded 360 items for Sega items, that's it in a nutshell.

    Ho hum!

well, something as important as this should have what Lord Denning calls "the big red hand" on top of it. i.e written in bold clear, large font.

    for example:

The PM (Private Messaging) Service of this board is not intended for use with confidential information. Moderators may have access for security purposes.

By using the PM service you agree to the above terms.

Of course whoever has database admin access will be able to read/edit any PM he/she wish.. thought I'm pretty sure he/she/they wouldn't. If anything it could be a security breach?

It's a wonder that there is no extension/mod to any board that would allow PM encryption. I could think of many boards were private correspondence in the wrong hands could mean trouble for a lot of people. Freedom message boards made by people who live in totalitarian regimes come to mind. I should think about writing one...

From what it sounds like the site database was compromised. I believe this due to the fact to once PMs are sent, no one can modify them without changing them in the database (on all forums software this is not possible without modifications to the source). Kevin needs to check out logs on his end, and see if anyone has been tampering with the database.

well.....if ProgrammingAce....or sobman doesn't cause a reaction with any filters...then i doubt there is a filter in place.

I've read once before, that an intepid person with too much time on their hands can somehow by-pass some vbulliten stuff and gain access to restricted areas and or pm's.....though that might only be a rumour

I don't believe anyone is reading our PMs because if they were I'd sure have had some throwback from a few people  Mostly pricks that I can't stand who are no longer here anyway.

It's a simple wordfilter set up to defeat spammers. Certain words will translate to "spam spam spam".

No one is checking you mail lol. I can't even check your mail without extreme measures.
