Help with soldering materials

Apologies if this is not the correct section for this. It does apply to console hardware, but very generally

I'm making a Dreamcast coders cable, but I have a couple general questions about the proper soldering materials. What gauge wire is not so thin where I spend a majority of the time trying to remove the insulation but not so high of a gauge where it causes issues? Can too high of a gauge wire cause wiring issues? If you recommend wire to use, could you recommend wire strippers for it as well?

I've done a little solder work making a phone line voltage inducer and installing an SD card board to one of my Dreamcasts. But I've never purchased wire and I want to know what I'm looking for

If you're making a coders cable why not just get a serial cable and cut that 2/3 from one end and solder everything to the cut end?

 

I have a Irwin 8 inch self adjusting semi-automatic wire stripper that I love when I'm stripping middle of the road gauged wire. It's not very helpful on very thin or highly multi-conductor wire though.

Selecting the tools you buy should depend on what you're doing and how much you intend on doing it. It sounds like you could get the job done with a serial cable and a little diagonal wire cutter.

 

Usually I work with 24 gauge wires for most projects. Generally it doesn't give me trouble. I've worked down to 30 and those are very thin and can break if flexed a lot like a developer cable.
