I think those old PIC16C series chips had a design "feature" where the security lock cells were quite a distance away from the array where the program is stored, so selective erase is quite feasible on them. I know a guy that I'm quite sure could pull the code from it, but it's quite expensive and never seemed worth it.

And I'd love to get one like that but the shipping prices would make it difficult.

Can you post a picture of the serial number sticker, one of the drive laser (just a snap of the front with the tray open), and confirm if it has a trap board (and if so, what is the serial of that) or not?

In my opinion what matters is not that they use the old/obsolete design, but that they are using only ONE version of the code. So, hopefully, all the chips will function the exact same. Unlike all the other chips which use random firmware and random compatibility, jumpers that do nothing but break compatibility, etc.

I wasn't knocking the project - just pointing out that it was very unlikely to have been reverse engineered in a behavioral sense because it's using the original parts, and they are not something you would use in a new design, and hence it's very likely that it's using the original code (or at least one version of it).

It will be interesting to see the results of your testing - although since I have long and bitter experience of the general perversity of electronic circuits I wouldn't be surprised at all if the results were rather less consistent than you seem to be expecting.

Sometime in the next two weeks I'll go through this thread and tally everything up to see if it's worth me going ahead with a purchase rather than waiting for the new modchip to be finished.

First things first, going to e-mail the supplier later this week and verify that stock actually exists.
