I hate Mutant Mudds. Just thought I'd through that in there.

Cave Story and Shovel Knight are brilliant though.

Mutant Mudds is HARD not even NES hard. Like "What retarded donkey brain monkey designed these shitty levels" hard.

Shovel Knight is the standard on which all wanna be retro games will be judged. It's just very well thought out, beautifully designed and hard but not so hard it's impossible. The Music is amazing as well. Xbox owners go the better extra level, Playstation owners got the better bonus armor. When Mighty no 9 kept getting delayed and delayed again (I have a feeling it's not coming out on the current release date either) Shovel Knight scratched that itch.

Phantom Breaker Battle Grounds is another work of utter brilliance. I'm a fan of Phantom Breaker anyway. Game gets no love and was delayed into oblivion on 360 in the US. Battle Grounds reminds me of Guardian Heroes in all the right ways.

I've only played the Wii U (on release) and 3DS (physical cart) versions of it. Might pick up the XONE version though since you say the extra level is good. Speaking of Shovel Knight, my Shovel Knight amiibo should be coming in today! Looking forward to seeing what that does in the 3DS version. So glad my 3DS version had Plague of Shadows too; that's a blast! (har har)

As for Shovel Knight being the standard: Dude, you gotta give credit where credit is due. Pixel's Cave Story is (in my mind) what originally started this retro craze, and that game is nothing short of sheer brilliance.

They are pretty inconsistent IMO, Mighty Switch Force and Ducktales were hideous while Shantae looks great.

Only problem is the XB1 isn't getting a physical version. I'll probably pick up the Wii U disc soon.

I'd say more Intellivision than Atari. The music in that game is awesome, I think there's a section of one song that's basically Guile's theme.

That's the problem with indie games: they're either gonna be faux-retro wankfests, pitiful attempts at making games le arte, or hilariously botched intersections of both.

I had to look up when Cave story came out. It predates Mega Man 9 by four years. So that is where the madness began.

And that's why people need to stop using the term "indie"; it means nothing. You've got "indies" with multi-million dollar budgets, those who make games like the ones complained about here and ones who just make games on the side.

Here's one that seems to get it right. AH Tribute games that explains it.

Friend is making this. Sorta like Shovel Knight some liberties were taken like using the color yellow which is not on NES color pallet. TBF this has been in development by one guy for 4 years a bit before the whole 8 bit shot out of a cannon.

I think it's just a style. Most don't get it right and I am ok with it overall but like cel shading of the early 2000s it is a bit overdone.

It is a style but when a game is made where blocks make up people, it comes off as lazy and I want nothing to do with the game.

Here's some really REALLY lazy shit

I just wish they'd hurry up and release Cuphead already.

I'm still angry It's XBONE only. Shit should be on PS4 as well, the typical XBONE Bro gamer can't appreciate Cuphead.

Bitter? That's a little presumptuous. I don't really understand how one user base is all that different from the other. It's coming out on Windows, so that's all I care about. It doesn't seem like it would be all too demanding, so you could probably get away with running it well on a PC. I know what response I'll receive, though: "I don't game on a PC." Then I guess you don't have enough desire to play the game then.

Also who knows if it'll get ported over to PS4.

I always thought it had a C64 feel to it.
