    Hi guys,

Bought this on ebay from a Chinese seller. Before anyone mentions the fact that its ebay and you should get electronics from a proper supplier, I only ordered this as I had an ebay voucher that needed to be used.

Just wondering if you guys think this is a fake?

It looks used, fake chips normally are newly manufactured.

Now that you say that, the pins do look a bit off. To be honest, i would just try it out and see what happens. It might be closest to what you get for quality.

I'm no expert, but that font looks sketchy. The "M" looks out of place and the top of the "A" is curved.

My thoughts exactly. The text seems way too thick (I think the logo is supposed to be two very thin lines), and the letters too curved.

I have since contacted Ramtron/Cypress, who have confirmed that the chip is counterfeit.

Now to try and get my money back through ebay, hopefully without having to send the item back.

My guess is that it is what it says - but they are parts that have been taken off boards. The reason for the dodgy marking is that they had a lot of chips with different date codes and lot numbers on them, and remarked them to all be the same. I've seen lots of parts like that.

Had a reply from the seller this morning, asking that I return the item and they will send a replacement sourced from a different supplier. I'm a bit sceptical that they would find a genuine supplier of the item so quickly, and the fact that the item is still listed. If I do send the item back, by the time I get a replacement, I'll no longer be able to file a claim if the replacement is the same, which I assume it would be.

Not sure what the best thing to do would be in this situation, has anyone had any dealings with fakes on ebay before?

Obviously you file a paypal claim, send the item back, get a new one and then close the paypal claim.

If the chip works as intended who cares..
and by fake I think you mean a clone, fake implies it does not function (just a lump of plastic)

I don't have the tools (or skill) to be soldering and desoldering a known counterfeit IC just to see if it works. I expect to get the part I ordered, not an unknown part. And when I said 'fake', I meant as in its not what it says it is on the label, though I can see that might not be clear from the title.

The seller has since given a refund and told me I don't need to send it back, so I might see if I can remove the plastic shell to see what is actually in there.

It probably is just a clone, clones function just the same but the manufactures of said clones don't pay royalties (a lot of cheap electronics they actually shave the label off to avoid royalties )

if you don't have the tools or skill to desolder the chip what use is trying to de cap it and determine what's "actually in there"..

I can see no reason for this to function any different than what it's advertised as. I usually use clones in my projects, just because it's from China does not mean they are out to get you and why make a fake chip and go to all that effort for a $1 profit..
if they were going to scam you they would have just not sent anything...

asverage post time from china is 2 months
longest you have to paypal claim is 45 days..

    What?

Fake never means it doesn't function - the word you are looking for is BROKEN.

You get fake Game Boy games - they work. Fake Gucci bags - they obviously hold items, so they work. Fake Rolex watches - couldn't sell them if they didn't tell the time.
