So, you haven't actually played it? You've just watched negative videos about it?

Nope. The name has a strikethrough now.

 Not that I see. I cycled through the themes and don't see anyone on this thread with a strikethrough.

Back on topic, while I haven't played it, I really have no interest in it. It might be the best game in the world, but I don't like the style, nor do I like the comparisons to Earthbound (had no interest in that either). It is also one of the most overhyped games I can remember being released recently.

My first PS4 games were GOING to be Drive Club and Project Cars.......shitty Gamestop had other plans.
Got DOA5 LR and Bloodbourne instead. NOW I just need you know the actual console (and a New 1080p TV with no over scan and requirement to Degause every 2 hours)

Your literally one of the first legitimate people that i'd meet saying they don't like Earthbound! It's about time there's someone with a real opinion on a overrated SNES game.

I've never been interested in Earthbound, but I think that has more to do with my general apathy towards JRPGs than anything about the game itself.

Well, that's not a terrible group. At least it wasn't like Klank and The Order 1886 or anything. Also what's Degause?

For me, it's the opposite: I love JRPG's. I could never get past the aesthetic and after watching some LP's on it, it just looks stupid to me (yes, I know that is some of the point, I still don't like it).

I can't help but deem Earthbound an outstanding JRPG not for its graphics but for its sheer ominous atmosphere soaked in impending doom and mystery, besides its quirky mood and humorous dialogue. Its major quality is not in its superficial appearance but at its core content and art direction. It's the kind of game that superficially seems joyful and childish but in reality it has a deep and profound plot with "dark twists". The first time I saw the intro for Earthbound I dropped my jaws at its geniality.

This is a piece of art and it is an awful contrast to the colorful and innocent graphics of Earthbound. The intro conveys the despair and hopelessness of the impending doom that permeates the whole game, and its soundtrack conveys the helplessness of an alien invasion. It is very creepy.

As for Undertale, it bothered me from the first time I heard about it. It seems to be so blindly over-hyped to the point of disgusting me and making me shy away from the game. Its graphics are awful and seem lazy and I personally think it lacks any kind of creative art direction. Its graphics are so primitive it is hard to see anything other than a lack of effort towards something more appealing and engaging. Most enemies look like a child's scribble. Its color patterns remind me of an Atari game. But this is all superficial and maybe it has much to offer beyond mere appearances. Nonetheless, there seems to be a fad over this game that overrates it way too much, so I refuse to play it and I don't expect much from its plot either.

The first part of the game can be somewhat tedious and repetitive. You basically 1) grind, 2) die, and 3) repeat until you level up a few times and earn enough cash to upgrade your starter weapons. A lot of people have were put-off by this.

I couldn't take it seriously for similar reasons when a friend urged me to at least try it. By the time I was about 1/3 of the way in, it became extremely engaging and I could barely stop playing it. The same thing also happened with Mother 3, although it becomes engaging much faster than it's predecessor imo.

Just to satisfy my curiosity, who besides users have over-hyped Undertale? I don't remember the developer hyping it any more than any other developer showing and explaining his/their game. Hype other users have generated doesn't alter the game's content nor how much enjoyment you'd receive from it. If it alters enjoyment, you care far too much about other people's opinions and have bought into their hype in the opposite way. Maybe it's just me, but not playing a game because other people have praised it sounds a bit silly and elitist.

The characters are memorable, the music is very well done and the combat is engaging due to the utilization of battle mechanics that I found to be pretty interesting. While I will agree the art style is generic as all hell and I don't particularly like it, it plays to the games advantage the farther you make it in.

No, it's not because other people have praised it. And it's also not because other people have basically developed a cult-like personality about it, which they have. Whether it was your intention or not, your post can come across as "well, you're an idiot if you don't want to play it" or "you need to become one of us...one of us...". It also ends in the typical "here's why this is a great game" banter.

I don't ascribe to the "it's cool to hate something that people like", I just do not want to play this game and am really tired of hearing about it from players, gaming media and having Youtube trying to shove it down my throat (oh, you watched a game video, you should watch these 2057 Undertale videos).

I agree! The same applies with Final Fanasty X & 7 plus certain anime shows in general
