I recently purchased a hxc floppy drive emulator with the intention of using it in a Amiga 500.

My intentions are to have it housed externally, with the internal drive still intact and usable. I am aware that the Amiga can't boot direct off the external drive, and that there is some method to switch the DF0/DF1 address lines which I'll have to find somewhere, that will take care of the not being able to boot from the external drive issue.

I just would like to know if the external drive (the Amiga-1010/etc) with the 23pin bus is actually just wired up direct to the drive inside the external case or if there is some sub-board controlling the drive? I can source a 23pin connector easily but I can't say the same for the original external drives.

Any info is much appreciated :)

It has been a while, but i believe all amiga floppy drives are daisy chained and contain a interface board for drive selection purposes. I don't have my Amiga harware manuals at hand and the only reference i could find with google was this one:
