In regards to the games transitioning between 240p and 480i, the framemeister will go black for a small amount of time while the resolution changes. Lasts roughly 3 to 5 seconds. Makes some games, like Resident Evil 2 on N64 almost impossible, or at the very least, very frustrating, to play. It's a shame... it's probably my only complaint with it at the moment. I have no experience with the XRGB3, so someone else will need to answer that. Might be an idea to open a new thread somewhere instead of this thread, as it'll likely get more attention if it's focused directly on what you have/want/need. Hope i've been of at least some help. :S

Can you share any settings for AES 3.5 via RGB cable?

My TV (Vizio LCD 27") does not sync, Pulstar is terrible loses sync every few seconds but so does even the Unibios menu (a little less often).
I guess I have to find the right "sync" or something like that.

 

Try adjusting the Sync Level. Default is like... 6? mine has to be on around 22 - 25 to sync.

 

Do I have to turn off auotsync? How about those H and V settings?

I tried to change sync from 6 all the way to 12, but it does not seem to help (actually it makes it worse eventually) ... what happens I believe is that my TV does not completely like the HDMI out of the Mini (I believe it's in lock mode and NeoGeo AES has a slightly different VSYNC, I have the exact same issue feeding SVideo (CXA1145 mod via 39o4 buffers) directly to the TV).

Pulstar seems to be the worst offender when it switches screens between the title/animation/gameplay, so far composite has been my only option with it and it looks terrible obviously.
I was hoping the Mini would help, and it well may if I find the magic incantation .... or a much more tolerant TV.

On the bright side 2 NTSC Genesis 2 and 1 PAL GX4000 {few games on this one generate custom signals and it's tear/mess galore} via RGB SCART are working great (the Genesis 2 have also SVideo mod as well but that looks terrible via the Mini [no colors or wrong colors] but quite OK if direct to TV), still waiting on proper RGB cables for Saturn/PS1-2/SMS, also my 7800 with SVideo board also works finally fine [my LCD TV does not like this SVideo direct, it loses sync as it does with the NeoGeo AES, just not as bad].
BTW the TV is fine with the SVideo from NeoGeo CD, I think I quickly tried also RGB and the opening screen was just working fine as well but we know that SNK changed the vertical sync on it to be closer to the 60hz needed (well 59.94 whatever).

 

Hmm, it really does seem like your TV is being a pain. What TV are you using? Also, if you have a HDMI splitter, maybe try going mini -> splitter -> TV. The splitter would deal with the syncing before the TV does, which might help. Another thing.. if your TV has a second HDMI port, have you tried that? One last thing.. Have you tried a different HDMI cable? Just throwing ideas out there, see if any of it helps.

 

It's a Vizio 27" LCD.

I am not sure a splitter per se would help I really believe it's very picky as to vertical refresh rate, it is know that NeoGeo AES (MVS way worse btw) is off in that regard.
The fact that also AES direct SVideo gives the TV trouble it's a sign (that I've seen on my 7800 which btw also it's a little off on that regard).
Chances are that composite works due to heavy signal conditioning that the TV needs to do hence it can tolerate more signal mishaps as it has the code/electronics to compensate (the end result looks bad but no lost signal).

Just for shit and giggles I may build a sync stripper anyway to see what gives, I just was under the impression I can force the Mini to unlock from source and produce a steady 60Hz signal even if that would mean some stutter here and there, after all AES is 59.15 or something like that (http://www.videogameperfection.com/2012/06/22/what-causes-games-to-stutter/)

 

You really should try a different TV you know. Vizio isn't exactly a quality brand, and I believe they're generally low quality.

 

Ive heard a lot of bad stuff about Vizio. My friend has a few and they always give him trouble with older console stuff.

I may give this OFF mode a shot and see what happens, 3 other consoles work just fine so obviously the TV and Mini work, but Auto forces the Mini to go outside of HDMI std if needed which I believe it's the case for my AES and I know my TV is picky on that one already (direct SVideo from AES already proved that).

I'll report here my finding.

 

Yeap, Sync OFF much better.
Some stuttering but I'm better off, also the 720p60 stutters less than 480p60 ... go figure.
As I said, I kind of sensed it, nice work XRGB Mini ;-)

 

I'm not sure the TV is to blame.
The fact that some consoles generate non std ~60Hz vertical sync is to blame, tolerance is a complex matter because you can only slow down so much before nasty things appear.

1 frame in 60 seems something any TV could compensate for, but that amounts to 16msec which is non trivial to absorb. CRT may be better off but LCD tend to only support narrow refresh rates .... I believe that is the reason the XRGB Mini offers both a Locked and Unlocked Sync mode. They thought about it. Also with the advent of HDMI std only 2 rates were really std, a 50Hz (i/p) and a 60Hz (i/p) [there is support for 24p for film material as well], the std does not leave much room for non std, it does allow them but I doubt many manufacturers support the complete gamut of possibilities.
