I have tried both methods and neither have seemed to work on my unit. Its missing the MagicGate function which is necessary for FMCB, I'm pretty sure.

The best way is to use FMCB on your PS2, but if you can't, a Gameshark for PS1 works well. Just find a way to tape down the switch for the door...

Sounds like the laser's just going up and falling back down, creating the click. Look for any blown fuses or VRMs.

Have you tried another controller? Also, look for damage in the slots/sockets.
