Zelda 2 BSX remake query and info
http://www.unseen64.net/2008/04/14/z...laview-remake/
Apart from this lone screenshot taken from a japanese magazine at the time, there is no other information that I know off on the Zelda 2 reamke for the satellaview, other than that is was planned to air on the service and got quite deep into development. Apparently one of my japanese friends who had satellaview even says it appeared in the news channel for a brief period that it was coming to BS-X and then just vanished.
Does anyone else have any information on the Zelda 2 remake for the satellaview service, and the possible reasons why it got cancelled and did not air??
My possible theory is maybe once they completed it they thought of doing a zelda 1/2 collection cartridge for the super famicom, though thats just my speculation.
If anyone knows anything please post!!!

I never be able to find much information about this one myself.
They might have started working on it after the zelda 1 remake but I think they cancelled it early in development since zelda 2 is not as popular as zelda 1 or alttp. But it's just speculation also... ;)

Zelda wikia says:
Unlike BS The Legend of Zelda, it would have been the same game with enhanced features instead of a game loosely based on the original. It was ultimately canceled in favor of the new storyline of the BS Zelda games.
That's all I know...

My two cents:
The text in the scan says something like "Of course it comes with Kanji text. Is this Zelda 3?" Doesn't that mean that the screenshot appeared before "A Link to the Past" (Zelda 3) was announced?
"A Link to the Past" came out in 1991, the Satellaview in 1995. Zelda 2 in '87. That would date the scan to sometime at the end of the 1980s!?

mmmh maybe they started a sequel using the same engine as zelda 2? it is certainly a pic from before zelda 3... maybe it was supposed to be a NES release? there "were" voices of a new zelda for nes going around for years before the snes was out.
still it's surprising that they would use zelda 2 engine...

this was in a magazine in the 90's, and also there were bits on the games news channel on satellaview that said a zelda remake was also due to be scheduled. The scan appeared in various magazines, and this japanese magazine scan is not the only one in existence, it's just the only one I could find to hand.

all i know is that, even today, i would love to see a remake of Zelda 2. Definately my favorite in the Zelda series, possibly my fav NES game ever. Why they never made another Zelda game in this style is beyond me.

Cause nearly everyone hate that one ;)
I was one of them some year ago but when I got my collector edition disc for cube i decided to go trough it for the first time. Before that I had only played it for something like 5 minute, hating it almost instantly, lol
But now I think it's a really good RPG for the NES (one of the best btw) but a still for me very bad zelda game.
Zelda games most be an action-RGB.

I was under the impression that this screenshot was from one of the early SNES previews, and does not necessarily show a real full-blown remake of Zelda 2, but infact what was most likely meant as a demonstration/representation of the capabilities of the Snes hardware.
I'd like to know what magazine/issue/vintage that one comes from, though

Superplay magazine mentioned this, along with a rumour of a Zelda All-stars type thing with the first and second Zelda games from BS on the cart. I no longer have the issue, but I'm sure someone here does.

I remember that "rumor".
If memory serves me well, it was about how the Satellaview and the Zelda remake for it would most likely be a Japan only release (it had a screenshot or two of BS Zelda, which I believe also are different from the final version), along with a note about that they hoped for the possibilities of a Zelda All-Stars like cartridge release "in the west".

This is because nobody ever checks the sources on pictures, nor mentions the pictures' context, let alone links back to their sources. Makes a very good case for picture watermarking [subliminalman]FrankCifaldi[/subliminalman].
Here's my webpage which has pictures from the Famicom Tsushin special on the Super Famicom announcement in 1988 with that picture:
http://www.disgruntleddesigner.com/c...secrets11.html
And here's the picture in question:
And now its context: That particular section in the SFC article explains the graphical capabilities of the SFC, including a large number of on-screen colours, and large memory addressing, allowing for Kanji text display. That mock-up pic of a recoloured Zelda 2 with kanji text is all that was ever seen of a SFC "Zelda 2". It's just a single-screen mockup shown during the SFC's tech demo showcase.

Excellent thats the mystery of that pictures olved, guess the news of the remake on the bs news channel was only rumour, and there was never a full remake went into production, unless they planned to use the existing stuff from the prototype games.
Thanks so much Ccovell.
